The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things - Book Review

The Queen of Bright and Shiny Things
by Ann Aguirre

What is it about:
Sage Czinski is trying really hard to be perfect. If she manages it, people won’t peer beyond the surface, or ask hard questions about her past. She’s learned to substitute causes for relationships, and it’s working just fine… until Shane Cavendish strolls into her math class. He’s a little antisocial, a lot beautiful, and everything she never knew she always wanted.

Shane Cavendish just wants to be left alone to play guitar and work on his music. He’s got heartbreak and loneliness in his rearview mirror, and this new school represents his last chance. He doesn’t expect to be happy; he only wants to graduate and move on. He never counted on a girl like Sage.

But love doesn’t mend all broken things, and sometimes life has to fall apart before it can be put back together again...

What did I think of it:
I've read most of Ann Aguirre's books, and loved and/or liked almost all of them. So even though I'm usually not into contemporary stuff, I decided to give this book a try.

And this is probably a really great read for people who love Contemporary YA books.

Don't get me wrong: I liked the book. But something was missing for me. It felt all too... contemporary.

Yes, I know! That's not really saying anything for those who want to know more.

Sage was a really great character. She's smart, friendly, and optimistic on the outside, but hiding secret hurts. Shane is a cool character as well. An artistic Emo kid, with more problems than common sense, but I liked him. The story of them getting to know each other, themselves, and their place in the world was also enjoyable, and fluffy at times even.

So all in all you can say I enjoyed this book, but it didn't Wow me. As I said earlier: I think people who love contemporary stuff, will love this book. I myself would have liked a few zombies, or a side order of Paranormal, added to this story to Oomph it up, and turn it from nice into great.

Why should you read it:
It's an enjoyable Contemporary YA read.
